The Tree Lady by H Joseph Hopkins

This is Katherine Olivia Sessions’ story. A tree planter who made a life-enhancing contribution to San Diego, the city that became her home. And in demonstrating the possibility of greening an apparently unpromising environment she set an example that spread across the world and forward to our own time, when tree planting feels more important than ever.

An inspiring example of a genre that is, I think, comparatively new – the picture book biography. So it is open for very young readers to explore the possibilities their own futures might hold and the paths, created by such pioneers, that they themselves might follow.

The text tells the story with a nice punchy, can-do style, each page closing with a variation of its chorus, ‘But Kate did.’ Jill McElmurry’s welcoming illustrations support and open out the story beautifully.
