Deservedly a classic, this is a joy to share with a child or for her to explore by herself. Allan Ahlberg’s jolly rhymes lead us cunningly round a circle, meeting familiar characters of nursery and legend. As we travel there are so many things to find, such enjoyable mischief and muddle along the way, delightfully pictured by Janet Ahlberg. She trained as a teacher but described herself as quite shy and so creating pictures became her way of sharing her warmth – and with more children than she could ever have touched as a teacher.
There is so much fun here, so many calamities averted and in a grand finale everyone we have met page by page gathers for a glorious picnic with, of course, plum pie. Mind you, someone really needs to relieve Baby Bear of his shotgun – that bear’s a menace!
