Goodbye Mog by Judith Kerr

So sensitively handled, Judith Kerr’s story of Mog’s passing: “she was dead tired… even her tail was dead tired” helps children find peace, not just with the death of a pet, but more largely with death itself.

Enough of Mog stays behind to sort out the new kitten and then to leave for good, knowing she will not be forgotten.

I had the opportunity recently to visit the Seven Stories Centre in Newcastle (great coffee) and see some of Judith Kerr’s illustrations for this book. Delicate on the printed page, they are even finer in the original.

If you like her work and haven’t read her book When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, I warmly recommend it. Through her childhood eyes she tells of her family’s escape from Nazi Germany before the Second World War. And luckily for this country, she came here.
