Two Can Toucan by David McKee
A favourite of my daughters when they were small. Or perhaps a favourite of mine, as I have a fondness for puns. I think this is David McKee’s first book. It’s the hero’s tale, the journey of self-discovery. A colourless, nameless bird leaves the jungle where all the animals laugh at him and finds useful employment in the city. Until the three-can accident – oh dear. Back he goes to the jungle, colourful now and with a name.
Since then David Mckee has become one of the best loved creators of picture books, recently given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Book Trust. This simple, fun tale already shows a fine grasp of storytelling. Fun for me too to remember reading it to two small girls.
