Angel on the Roof by Shirley Hughes

Perhaps this is a little more like the kind of book you might expect on a site with this name. Certainly here is an angel, an angel who is suitably mysterious. And an angel who brings about a kind of miracle, for Lewis has a dodgy leg and wants to be like the other kids. And in the best traditions of stories, it doesn’t work out quite the way Lewis reckoned it should.
A doyenne of children’s illustrators and writers, Shirley Hughes has been enriching and creating books for many years. I have a book beautifully illustrated by her in 1953 and this was published in 2019.
She draws as naturally as talking, not bothering with fuss and flimsy, but conveying something from her wise heart. Lewis has something of her I think, for the angel helps Lewis to look and he becomes an artist.
