Hurrah for Horace by Christopher Sell

Well. this one is my own. It’s taken a while. To quote C.S.Lewis in his introduction to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, “when I began it I had not realized that girls grow quicker than books”.

Mostly pictures with just a few words, Hurrah for Horace takes you through a day with Horace and Jane, who shares his house. In flies an angel in the form of an elephant and their adventures start. Horace goes aloft, Jane goes afloat and at the end of the day home draws them together again.

Lots of scope for a young reader (or non-reader) to investigate what’s going on and create their own story out of its elements: the elephant, the umbrella, the aeroplane, the apple tree, the rainbow and the cat.

Some of these elements have been in my life for a long time.  Years ago I made a woodcut of an elephant and a friend pointed out that everything else in the picture cast a shadow, but the elephant was shadowless, and it dawned on me that elephant was actually an angel. Which suited me as I like elephants (and angels). My grandparents lived in India for over twenty years and came back to England with elephants: wood, ivory, brass. They were childhood mascots and amulets. And so out of the depth of time a story emerges.
